Cleaning of a Griswold Fruit & Lard Press

I picked up two Griswold Fruit & Lard Presses I'd like to clean up:
    1) A No. 1 classic 2 quart and all but the tin strainer looks painted gray , how can this one be stripped off? Will a lye bath do it?
    2) the other is a No. 4 that's not painted, can it just be cleaned up with soap and water then seasoned?

Thanks in advance for any input

Yikes. I don't know the answer to your questions, but I think it would help if you posted a few pics? Mary
